Why is this important?
It is widely recognised that pre-schools across the globe enhance the development of children. They interact with their peers and improve social skills that prepare them for school. They learn from each other and from the skills they are taught by pre-school teachers.
Our pre-school adds value in several other ways. In the section "Why do we do it? We explained that HIV / AIDS has left many children without one or both parents and that children are often being cared for by ageing grandmothers and / or relatives that are stretched. By offering care for children in our pre-school we can give these carers a chance to rest.
It is also not uncommon for children to be cared for by older siblings that are pulled out of school to care for their younger siblings. Giving them the chance to put the children in their care gives them the chance to go back to school and restart their education.
Part of the concept of our Sewing business is that members of the community (mainly women) can earn an income. By offering a chance for children to be cared for in a pre-school, we are giving women a chance to work and earn an income for their family.
We are not able to offer care in the pre-school for free and have to charge a fee to cover our running costs. We have not included the cost of construction, materials, toys etc in our running costs. Rather, we include the cost of salaries, food and a nominal fee for maintenance.
